On the anniversary of a terrible incident at Buali Sina Petrochemical Company (BSPC), NEXO presented its position regarding the importance and priority of prevention of major hazard industry incidents to crisis management. In July 2016, a simple maintenance job at BSPC done without due precautions caused hydrocarbon leakage that ignited by a nearby fired-heater and turned into a local fire, which later broke into a major fire engulfing a distillation tower nearly 130 m in height. Upon subsequent explosion inside it, projectiles from the tower hit a large storage tank containing naphtha, which caused escalation of the fire. The fire took 3 days to extinguish and challenged adequacy of local and regional firefighting facilities and equipment as well as crisis management chain of command and strategy. Estimations set the direct loss from the incident at around USD 100m.
